Large-leaved aster is a characteristic groundlayer plant of northern deciduous and coniferous forests. It grows in dry to moist (but not wet) habitats on sandy loam, loam, or black organic soil. It's large, heart-shaped leaves are rough and sandpapery. Only some shoots produce flower stalks. Flower heads, though few in number, are large and showy.
